BRAND HIGHLIGHT: ICHCHA
Txtile is thrilled to partner with Ichcha, a brand dedicated to preserving traditional Indian techniques through collaboration with expert textile makers. With a purpose-driven mission to promote handmade goods and empower women, Ichcha plays a vital role in keeping the art of textiles alive in India.
MEET THE SISTERS OF ICHCHA: RACHNA, RUCHIKA AND MONIKA
It all started with a wish to preserve and promote handmade textiles. This passion led them on a journey to India, where they witnessed the rich tradition of artisan craftsmanship. Rachna, formerly in the corporate world, now dedicates herself entirely to Ichcha. Ruchika, a master in block printing, draws inspiration from nature's imperfections. Monika, an environmentalist, advises on sustainable practices. Together, they craft products that honor generations of artisanal tradition, blending expertise with passion to create unique, handmade treasures.
ICHCHA GIVES BACK THROUGH EDUCATION
Passionate about education, Ichcha recognizes its profound impact, especially in regions like India, where societal norms can limit women's opportunities. In 2023, a portion of the brand's profits was dedicated to funding a full year of university education for 10 women in a rural Indian village. This initiative reflects Ichcha's dedication to using its resources to uplift communities worldwide.
ICHCHA PRACTICES TRADITIONAL INDIAN TECHNIQUES
BLOCK PRINTING
Block printing, an ancient technique predating modern machinery, involves hand-printing using wooden blocks. When tapping the blocks artisans create their own unique lyrical patterns while they cover the fabric with beautiful shapes.
NATURAL DYING
Dyed using natural minerals and flowers, each fabric undergoes meticulous folding before being immersed in dye vats and sun-dried on the ground. This technique is popular in India due to the hot summers, allowing the fabrics to dry quickly.
HAND WEAVING
Each product begins with cotton sourced from organic farmers, hand-spun into thread, and woven on traditional handlooms, resulting in a fabric known as "Khadi". Additionally, Ichcha collaborates with dhurrie weavers, preserving a fading tradition practiced by only two families.
HAND EMBROIDERY
Ichcha partners with non-profit organizations supporting tribal women skilled in intricate hand embroidery. Remarkably talented, these women can embroider straight lines without the aid of chalk or markers, showcasing their exceptional craftsmanship.
